Mammals started because of Susan Rosenberg, an artist I admired & researched when I attended art school. She passed away, & I began painting horses.
Each horse appears to rush into the frame, emitting an anxious & repetitive energy like the nature of technology slamming us, day-in-day-out. Cats, hands, & fishbowls enrich the painted dynamic with a sense of play & humor, establishing a dual personality within each work. Take a fish in a bowl. I believe all animals hate us a little bit. When I paint fish, they appear irritated, as if to say to us: “F*CK YOU, I’M IN THIS BOWL!” In a way, we’re all in a bowl, & creating allows us to break out of the glass.
